So as I was saying, they are not actually made from tea and in most cases they will contain no caffeine. This is one of their biggest plus points for me as while caffeine can be great in the morning and as a little pick me up throughout the day it’s good to have a nice hot drink that you can brew up before you go to bed. This is where tisanes really shine for me. How nice is it, especially in winter, to snuggle up in bed with a good book and a cup of tea? Oh it’s just lovely. But it turns pretty ugly when you do this with black tea and end up not being able to get to sleep.
Another benefit of herbal tea is that quite often the ingredients will have certain health benefits and so you can pick and choose which one to drink based on your current state of body The Lost Book of Herbal and mind. Chamomile for example is known to help with sleep so (as I was discussing above) could be a good one to drink before bed.
Peppermint tea is said to aid digestion to drink this one during or after a big meal to help settle your stomach. I am not a doctor or a scientist so I don’t know the reason for it but I swear it works! Many a time I have stuffed myself with starchy carbohydrates and felt bloated and sick. But, put the kettle on and brew up a lovely pot of loose leaf Peppermint tea and after 15 minutes or so you start to feel a little less bloated.
Tisanes are also brilliant because you can use them as an ingredient to add to other teas. For example, a rose tea might make a lovely addition to an old black tea that has lost its flavour. To experiment with using herbal teas as ingredients look in the back of your tea cupboard for some old loose leaf tea that had been forgotten about and blend into it rose tea, chrysanthemum flowers, pieces of dried ginger – any type of tisane can be used here. Trust your nose and your judgement and see what treats you can conjure up.
The variety of herbal teas available on the market is incredible. It would be impossible to try them all. Many companies will specialise in creating their own herbal blends too so if you look around you really could find something completely unique!
While I love my black tea in the morning I am going to try to drink more herbal teas/tisanes because I don’t want to miss out on all the wonderful and exotic flavours out there!
